Tactic Guide: 4-1-2-1-2

Strenght, weakness, advantages and disadvantages of 4-1-2-1-2 formation. Replace both of our CM to gain better offensive and defensive capabilities.

Combine two fromations can be good idea to get more advantages. 4-1-2-1-2 formation is a combination between 4-4-2 formation and 4-3-3 formation. This formation has better attack and defensive capabilities compare to 4-4-2 formation. But this formation is rather weak in midfield area.

In this article we will examine strength and weakness of 4-5-1 formation. Base on our examination, we can decide the best defending and attacking positions to minimize the disadvantages and maximize our advantages.

In this article, i will use some terminologies that already explained in previous article entitled “Stone Wall”.

Strength Vs weakness

Before we start talk about strength and weakness of 4-1-2-1-2 formation, an overview of this formation will be showed below.

Strenght: 4-1-2-1-2 formation has better offensive and defnsive capabilities than 4-4-2 fromation. Our AM can act as an extra striker and our DM can act as an ANC or CD. Not like 4-3-3 formation 4-1-2-1-2 formation have RM and LM as wingers.

Weakness: 4-1-2-1-2 formation replace both CM in 4-4-2 with AM and DM. This change will make more room in the centre of your midfield area. That is mean that you will lose more midfield battles, especially againts 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 3-5-2 and 3-6-1 fromation.

Defending and attacking position

Defending position:

Add a DM is very good idea to strengthen our defence. Using above defending position, we will have at least five men in our red area. Under heavy bombardment our RM and LM will act as RWB and LWB. Our AM is responsible to supply the ball to both of our ST in counter attack.

Attacking position:

Above attacking position work very well in close all over style. Our LM,AM and RM will act as second attack line. If our RM and LM has good physical abilities, they can be placed stright in line with both of our ST, and act as LW and RW. This mean that we will have at least four men in enemy red area.

Using 4-1-2-1 formation We will have two defensive line. Our LB, DM and RB will act as first defensive line. They are responsible to cover enemy yellow area, wait for rebound and intercept enemy counter attack. Using two CD is enough to cover the second defensive line since enemy’s strikers ususlly will stand infront of our first defensive line. If our enemy has fast striker set our CD to mark him in our own half.
