Subliminal Messages in Video Games
Am I the only one who picked up on this?
Recently, I stumbled upon an article stating that Super Mario Brothers is chock full of subliminal messages. I thought about it, and I realized they were right. Not in the normal stoner conclusion. “Mario eats a bunch of mushrooms and goes on a trip about saving his girlfriend from turtles and wind up toys.” No, I saw the true political implications of it.
Mario is a plumber, representing the working man. He is caught in the mushroom kingdom, obviously symbolizing his home land of Italy. He ventures out and stomps on goombas. Goomba is a lesser used term for Italian Mafiosos. Now at one time, there was a civil war in Italy between the mafia element of the country, and Communist sympathizers. The working man being fed up with the status quo. Mario is the working man. He goes out, and kills the mafia by smashing their heads in with hammers or jumping on them. The revolution does not stop there. The Communist Machine is programmed to destroy monarchy. He sets out after the King. On his path to destroy royalty, he fends for his life in the wild. Eating any food he can, even wild mushrooms. Caring a flower of his lover’s to light the fire of passion in his soul. Finding safety only in those places where the Star is shining. His quest only ends when the king is truly defeated.
Powerful stuff, but that made me think even more. What does Sonic the Hedgehog represent? Why as anyone could guess, he represents the opposite of Nintendo’s Communist mascot. Freedom. America. Fast paced, always changing, always running in search of his “golden ring”. The golden ring symbolizing the dream Americans hold within. That which keeps the moving, keeps them alive in adversity. Every path is different, but there is always a way to catch what you desire. Lurking, however, and the end of some paths is the red machine. Dr. Robotnik (or eggman to the fan boys or newer players) The corporate machine. Bearing down on our freedom to choose with any strange and often intimidating tactic they can conspire to create. Any true American will jump at the chance to defeat this adversity, clutching their dreams in hand, never letting themselves be defeated. Sometimes you find friends to help you along the way (Tails) or misguided tools who soon learn their folly (Knuckles). In any case, you must keep running until you collect what you need and at long last your dream is yours.
I have been caught up in the Fan Boy war between Nintendo and Sega since it first began. Sega may be defeated, but Freedom Never dies.
that was probably one of the dumbest things that i wasted my time reading
Well, my friends and I have a theory that Mario’s mushrooms are filled with steroids, and when he finds a golden star…let’s just leave it at he’s “high.”
On the other hand, I’m a huge Sonic fan and couldn’t agree more. While Nintendo won’t waste their time reading into history books, Sega knows that every good person strives for peace, and they’ll befriend someone for what’s inside, and not out (for example, if Sega was brainless, Sonic and Knuckles would always work together just because Knuckles was strong, and Tails would just stay home and do the boring stuff. And everyone would be a hedgehog.). Even though there are many other good and bad things I would like to point out, I do have one thing to say against Sonic X. Chris is gay. He’s like a parasite when Sonic’s around, and if you watch the first episode, when Chris finds Sonic there’s a part when Sonic looks naughty and Chris stares at him like the hedgehog is his true love. There’s nothing wrong with showing kids that they can have friends that watch out for them, but when they start thinking only about them it’s plain wrong. I’m a girl, so I don’t know too much about guy relationships, but my friends are not gay in any way. I do know what gay looks like.
So when we get back to the subject, you also realize that in other episodes Chris will only talk about Sonic, and wanting to go somewhere with him, instead of everyone else. He does enjoy his other friends, but if there was one person in the world that he seems to want to spend eternity with it would be Sonic. It doesn’t help that Chris is three years younger, and that Sonic seems very immature for his age, when Chris acts more adultlike then it should be safe for a twelve year old to on a kids’ show.
That’s all I have to say for now.
Why did I waste my time reading this whole article? I hope you read this comment first and avoid wasting your time on this horribly stupid article.
all of the games have subliminal messages…If you look hard enough.
