Top Six NES Games

These are my picks for the top NES games of all time.

Id like to start off this top 6 list by saying that there will be no Mario or Final Fantasy games on this list because Mario has being praised enough already and Final Fantasy isn’t fun. Yes I said it no bombarded me with your hatred, tell me how Final Fantasy was a revolutionary game that paved the way for future greats, tell me that it’s a truly complex interactive cinematic adventure and yes tell me that I don’t know what I’m talking about. When I (and probably most of you) play a game on the NES today you want to do one thing and on thing allow usually, have fun. Now that I’ve gotten threw that longwinded explanation lets start this top 6 list. Why top 6, because I like to go one step beyond.

  1. Mike Tyson’s: Punch Out!!- This game kicks the crap out of every boxing game that’s come out since it. Once you beat the first couple of punching bag opponents the game takes a good shot of coke and cranks its difficultly level to Devil May Cry 3. You remember just as well as I do getting you ass handed to you by that tub of shit King Hippo and when (or if) you eventually make it the fight with Mike Tyson you get killed by that ear eating lunatic and wonder if anything you did really matter.
  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game- This game focuses on the three key elements to making a video game that kicks ass. 1. Give you lots and lots of bad guys to kill. 2. Have simple and awesome multi player (Why cant developers now days figure out that sitting next to a friend and playing a game with him is way better then playing him on line *cough* Motor Storm *cough*). 3. Being fun is important the plot, the graphics and the logic are not.
  3. TETRIS- Man I really am simple minded, but how could I not put TETRIS on the list. The damn things addictive and its being so successful that it’s created so many ports to every platform imaginable, I have TETRIS on my DS, all of my computers, my 360 and my phone. Just for the recorded I am talking about the Atari TETRIS that I was addicted to as a child not the Nintendo one.
  4. Contra- Contra is (and please understand what I mean by putting so much emphasis on this) the best 2-player game ever. I dare you; no I challenge you to tell me about a 2-player game that is better then Contra. No game has made killing an endless stream of what I believe are Vietnamese football players and then kill there bosses (The aliens for Alien) better then Contra. (Army of two eat you heart out)
  5. METROID- METROID was the first game (or movie) that truly scared me the fact that my lone hero was trapped in the maze like catacombs of a horrible alien filled with monsters really made me piss myself. This is the only game that I suggest you play when know ones around (excluding Dead or Alive Extreme 2).
  6. The Legend of Zelda- Yes I said that story doesn’t matter in games, but I should have put an asterisk next to that because a good story can really help a game as long as developers don’t decide to make the story more important then the game play then I’m down with games that have a good and in Legend of Zelda’s case great story. Zelda was the first game that my parents truly despised; I would play it for hours, ignore my chores and generally stop caring about anything but finding the next weapon. So there you go Zelda wins at the price of my childhood (apparently worth $20 to Nintendo) and my parent’s phone bill (I must have called the Nintendo game help hot line at least 50 times).

Why isn’t there an “I Don’t Like It!” button?

Eh, decent enough. I would have put Castlevania in place of Tetris, but that’s just me. I’m guessing this is your personal list, so I would suggest titling it something like “My top six NES games” because I know you would receive a lot of flak for not including any Mario games. I know you think they’ve been “praised enough,” but it’s the equivalent of doing a list of the greatest songs by British bands and not including anything by the Beatles. That’s just my two cents.
