Why I Want to be a Video Game Developer
A short essay I had to write for my grade 11 computer science course.
Video Game Developer
Video game developers are a hard working group of people. They work to make video games for people, like us, to enjoy. They cater to the millions of people who play video games on a daily basis. But who are these people? Why are they doing this? Is creating video games worth all of the trouble that people have to go through to make them?
Video game developer is a very generic title for someone who works in this field, because in more cases than not there are specialized professions that come from hundreds of people to create a video game. Programmers, graphic designers, musicians, producers, and testers all work together to create the video games we know and love. Programmers are the people who code the game. They tell the system to do what it has to do, and make the game work like it should. Graphic designers are used to make games look like a piece of art. The graphics of the game are very important because they are needed to make good first impressions. Most of the budget for video game development goes towards graphic designing. Musicians create the amazing musical scores we here in video games. Producers manage the development of the game and makes sure everything is done correctly. Testers play the game before it is released to the general public to find glitches within the game so that the game is at its max potential when it is released.
The average earnings as a video game developer can range between $30,000 and $90,000 depending on experience and what your role is. Freelancers may make less than this. When working with larger corporations there is the potential to earn more.
The education requirements differ between the several positions. For programmers a diploma or degree in computer science or other related subjects is required. It is also necessary to know many coding languages (such as C++) and to know how to code for several consoles and PCs/Macs. Graphic designers and musicians are required to have an arts diploma. They also must have experience with their specialties. Producers require to have experience with other specialties (especially programming) along with a corresponding diploma or degree. Testers do not usually require any formal training, however they will not be able to actually create the video games without training.
