Why Play Star Trek Online

Despite the "Freemium" cross to bear, STO is a solid MMO.

Greetings, dear readers. One of the top reasons I don’t publish as much as I should on Triond is my continued engagement with the as-of-January free-to-play MMO game, Star Trek Online. So, harness your demons and let your demons put out like demons – here’s a list of reasons why you should give STO a spin:

Star Trek Online is Truly Free-To-Play
Of all the alleged “F2P” MMO’s I’ve played, there’s always some point where the wallet needs to come out. STO bucks this trend, with microtransactions being a bells-and-whistles or quality-of-life thing. If you’re absolutely dying for some premium stuff, but don’t want to spend the green, you can, in a roundabout way, exchange in-game currency for premium things, while your wallet stayed in your pocket the whole time.

Star Trek Online Mangages to be a Trek Game That Doesn’t Completely Suck
I’m a fan, no doubt, of Star Trek, but certainly not one of bad video games. These phenomena have crossed paths many, many, many times. STO manages to avoid this crappy legacy, all the while staying (mostly) canon, and being a good MMO in its own right.

Star Trek Online is Customizable
Another great aspect to STO is the degree of customization of aesthetics in this game. You can alter the physical appearance of both your captain and bridge crew. This extends from the uniforms your captain and crew wear to the very ship you boldy go to the final frontier in. While not a game-making/game-breaking element, this is a nice alternative to 12 11 10.2 million blood elf paladins running around in whatever tier set du jour.

Star Trek Online’s Space Combat is a Hoot
The biggest gameplay highlight in STO is the fast-paced space combat. Phasers and torpedoes, impulse engines and deflector shields, what have you. It feels authentic to Star Trek, from fast and deadly escort vessels like the Defiant class to ponderous, invincible cruisers like the Galaxy Class.

I’ll be Writing a Guide to Star Trek Online

Yes, there is a oft-outdated wiki. But you can benefit from my witty counsel about how to fight, how fly, how to seduce Orion Animal Women, and how to get the most out of your Star Trek Online experience.
