There will come a point during your time with Rayman Legends where you’ll run out of ways to express how much you enjoy it. By a few hours in, you’ll have exhausted every synonym you know for "pretty." A few stages after that, "fun." By the end: "challenging." And only in the rarest occasion will you mutter the likes of "confusing," no thesaurus necessary. Don’t be fooled by its disarming charm: this 2D platformer eventually becomes as difficult as it is visually alluring. But Rayman Legends’ precise level design and controls, coupled with its gorgeous art style, catchy music, and impressive stage variety make overcoming that difficulty a memorable and worthwhile experience.
It finally happened. Ubisoft and Ancel have surpassed Nintendo and Miyamoto. At least this time. The first signs of this event had come with Rayman Origins, 2D platformer packed with interesting ideas that marked the return of the eggplant Ubisoft kissed market in High Definition.
The mark of a better video game, for me, is that it lingers in my mind. I think about it after I’m done playing with it. It adds something enriching to my life, to my mental catalog of experiences. The bad games don’t stick with me. I mostly forget them. I don’t think about them. It’s curious then, that just two days after finishing Rayman Legends, I feel as if I’ve forgotten most of it.
On PS3 and 360, these puzzles require precise timing which makes it more difficult played in single-player, but I still found that to be a good challenge; it provides another interesting twist that gave me a fun level of control over the environment. It’s great that Ubisoft figured out how to make this co-op idea work in single-player, and that the frequent and well-placed checkpoints make sure it never feels frustrating.
The most remarkable thing about Rayman Legends is how consistently it introduces new and unpredictable ideas over its roughly 12 hours.
Did you know ducks could wall-jump? Well, maybe not all ducks. But fowl sprouting the head of a certain limbless hero definitely can. Rayman Legends is unabashedly weird–relishes in the bizarre even–though never to the detriment of its fantastic action sequences. As you dash across platforms to the beat of a mariachi "Eye of the Tiger," or tickle armored guards to lower their defenses, you realize that Legends is strange with a purpose. It uses absurd scenes to imbue this feisty adventure with enough variety to keep you continually amazed, and presents every disparate scenario with expert care. Rayman Legends’ off-kilter identity serves as the foundation for this wild and crazy journey.
Where you set it matters.
