Video Game Genres

Video games have become very popular, and it has become necessary to group them into categories. The genre of video games is based upon the player-game interaction, rather than the environment or feelings, like in books or movies. But what are these genres?

  • Action – These games are fast-paced and contain action. Violence is usually included and combat is primarily the focus.

Examples: Call of Duty, Halo

  • Puzzle – These games test the player’s knowledge, logic, and thinking skills.

Examples: Minesweeper, The Impossible Quiz

  • Adventure – This type of game requires players to interact with characters and the environment. Exploration of the world is usually encouraged.

Examples: Tomb Raider, Uncharted

  • Action and Adventure – These games are a combination of the two genres. They are fast-paced games where the environment and characters are important.

Examples: The Legend of Zelda, Assassin’s Creed

  • Role-playing – These games allow the player to create his/her own character and make choices for themselves.

Examples: The Elder Scrolls, World of Warcraft

  • Strategy – These games give the player to control a world or environment. Careful thought is required to achieve success.

Examples: Sims, Tower Defense

  • Casual – These games have simple rules and do not require commitment.

Examples: Candy Crush Saga, Guitar Hero

  • Horror – These games cause the player to have fear or anxiety.

Examples: Slender, Bioshock

These are just a few of the main video game genres in which games are organized into. What games do you like to play, and why?
